Passenger Boarding Gates
Associated British Ports required a solution to an interesting engineering problem. When a cruise liner docks at a port there is a requirement for passengers to board or exit the liner both safely and efficiently. Many ports incorporate a sky bridge to meet the gangway of the ship, but the position of the gangway can vary depending on a number of factors during the docking manoeuvre.
To help facilitate a clean docking procedure that allows the passengers to board or exit safely, EDS have designed, manufactured and installed large scale automated passenger gate systems at a number of sites. The solution was designed and built specifically for this purpose, in close consultation with the port operators.

Integration of the sky gates into the existing port terminals included suitable design for the physical fitting of both the main assembly and the automated sliding passenger gates. EDS also provided power, logic controllers, motors, gears and sensor systems for automation. EDS have provided an end to end service for the logistics of the project, including co-ordinating and scheduling the client’s onsite requirements and provision of services from multiple agencies.

EDS have developed this solution based on the client’s requirements from the ground up. From producing a functional specification based on the client’s needs early in the project lifecycle, to providing full engineering assets and design specifications for scrutiny by all stakeholders. The multi-site project has been very successful, being completed on time and within budget every step of the way.
