Rail Network First from EDS

Bespoke Telescopic Cantilever Level Crossing Gates, or as Network Rail refer to them as Power Operated Sliding Barrier (POSB) on User Worked Crossings (UWCs)

Network Rail and EDS deliver a first for the UK rail industry, bespoke cantilevered telescopic gates for level crossings. These state of the art automatic gates are designed to solve the problems caused by high winds (common to barriers and swing gates) at level crossings. EDS UK’s gates replace a previous provider’s swing gate installation at the Network Rail West Dyke Road Railway Level Crossing. The new installation was developed with a “safety first” design principle. The gates use position/rotation sensors and a P.L.C. (Programmable Logic Controller) to vary their speed dependant on the position of the gate, this coupled with “fast stop” edge sensors help ensure safe operation

Dave Morgan, area director for Network Rail, said:

“We have been all too aware of the problems suffered at West Dyke Road in high winds and decided that the level of disruption caused needed addressing ahead of the original programme. The new barrier has been designed with this specific problem in mind and is unlike any existing crossing on the network, and we are confident that its installation will help improve the flow of traffic and pedestrians in Redcar with the new Power Operated Sliding Barrier (POSB).”
